She attended S.S. Cyril & Methodius School, St. Joseph Middle School, South Park Jr. High and Carroll High School, where she graduated in 1980. Lisa excelled in academics and athletics. She won district, bi-district and regional championships for the lady Tigers as a standout runner. Lisa was a finalist at the Texas U.I.L. State Cross Country Meet and in the mile run at the U.I.L. State Track meet in both 1979 and 1980.

In 1980, Lisa was offered admission to and entered Yale University. There she earned a bachelor's degree in Political Science and Economics, graduating cum laude (with honors) in 1984. Ms. Gonzales returned to Texas in 1984 to attend the University of Texas School of Law. There she met and wed Joseph Barrientos, a native of Austin, Texas, while the couple was in law school. Lisa Gonazles graduated from the University of Texas School of Law in May of 1987.

After passing the bar exam in August of 1987, Lisa began work in Austin as an assistant attorney general for Jim Mattox in the Insurance, Banking and Securities division of the Texas Attorney General's office. She continued working on behalf of Texas consumers in that position until 1990, when she became Assistant General Counsel for the Texas State Banking Department.

Upon her return to Corpus Christi in 1992, Lisa began working as a prosecutor in the County Attorney's office for Carl Lewis. In 1996, she was elected Nueces County Justice of the Peace for precinct 1, place 1 where she served with distinction until September of 1999. Lisa Gonzales also served as an Assistant District Attorney from 1999 to 2002 and in November of 2002 was elected as Judge of County Court at Law No. 2 of Nueces County, Texas. She continues to serve in that capacity through the present time, having been re-elected without opposition in 2006.
